Narrative Description:
Bridge 2490003 carrying Smyrna Road over the Finley River in Christian County is a 1912, 120’ long, seven-panel, pin-connected Pratt through truss span with three girder approach spans on the north end and two girder approach spans on the south end, which were replaced in 1977 and substantially repaired in 2004. The truss was fabricated by the Canton Bridge Company of Canton, Ohio.
The bridge has a total length of 281’. It has a concrete deck with a roadway width of 11’ 10”. There are steel pile bents and concrete column piers. Due to deterioration, it is currently posted at 5 tons.
Based on the 2019 National Bridge Inventory list, Missouri has thirty-nine pin-connected through truss bridges. Thirty-eight of these bridges are located on the county and local roadway system (off-system bridges) and one is located on the state highway system.
Bridge 2490003 was recommended as not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) during the Historic Bridge Inventory described as a typical example with poor physical integrity due to the replacement of the substructure and the approach spans. Despite this recommendation, Christian County recognizes the local historic significance of this structure.
On behalf of Christian County, Great River Engineering (GRE) is now accepting proposals for the relocation and reuse of the bridge or its components until April 19, 2024. Interested parties should contact GRE to request additional information and a proposal checklist.
