I-70 Environmental Assessment: I-435 to I-470
MoDOT's Kansas City District, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), will evaluate improvement alternatives and complete an Environmental Assessment (EA) for Interstate 70 (I-70) between Manchester Trafficway/Interstate 435 and Interstate 470, also known as I-70: I-435 to I-470.
Since its original construction more than 50 years ago, I-70 has been a vital lifeline for moving people, goods and information across Missouri and beyond. This project is one of several which will modernize the I-70 corridor across the state.
The Environmental Process for this portion of I-70 will begin in the Fall of 2024. Initial steps include efforts to understand the traffic volumes and safety conditions throughout the corridor. More information will be posted as the project kicks off.
Project Goals
Based on previous studies, MoDOT will identify improvement alternatives that will:
- Improve safety
- Reduce congestion
- Improve accessibility and goods movement
- Restore and maintain existing infrastructure
Through additional studies, MoDOT will:
- Validate and update the purpose and need for improvements in this corridor as part of the Environmental Assessment.
- Recommend improvement alternatives by December 2025.
- Engage the community and stakeholders to inform the process throughout the project.
- Submit the Environmental Assessment for necessary approvals.
Community Engagement
Thank you for your interest in this project. You will find a full timeline for this project below.
MoDOT is improving aging infrastructure along I-70 between Manchester Trafficway/ I-435 and I-470.
In this phase, MoDOT is conducting an Environmental Assessment.
In the coming months, the project team will hold public meetings on this project to hear community feedback and review current concerns, ways to improve safety, reduce congestion, and reconnect the community.
What is an Environmental Assessment?
An Environmental Assessment (EA) is a federally required document under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) to evaluate potential impacts to the natural and manmade environment. EAs are done to help agencies, elected officials and the public make sound decisions on proposed improvements. There are several steps for EA’s and the public has opportunities for input along the way.
During the current environmental study phase of work, these are the primary goals:
- Identify existing conditions.
- Validate and review the purpose and need for the proposed improvements.
- Evaluate potential impacts of the preferred alternatives.
- Engage with stakeholders to provide project feedback.
