Purpose and Need/What’s the Problem?
The Missouri Route 43 bridge over the Elk River in McDonald County was built in 1960 and is in deteriorating condition in need of frequent maintenance.
Project Information:
The contractor will replace the current bridge with a higher, wider and longer bridge. The project includes streambank stabilization along the north bank of the Elk River east of the bridge, new barrier walls and permanent pavement striping.

Why is this bridge being replaced?
The Route 43/Elk River bridge was built in 1960 and is in deteriorating condition in frequent need of maintenance.
What is the purpose of the work on the stream bank northeast of the bridge?
The bank of the Elk River is subject to frequent erosion due to the river current. Stream bank stabilization necessary to protect the north end of the new bridge from erosion.
Will access to the Elk River and the conservation area be restricted during construction?
No, Cowskin Access Conservation Area is adjacent to the project and will remain open for the duration of the project. A temporary construction easement will need to be acquired from the Missouri Department of Conservation in order to facilitate construction of the new bridge, however the easement will not restrict access to the conservation area.
Will I be allowed to float the Elk River during construction?
Yes, the river will be navigable by boat or canoe under the bridge, however temporary closures may be required when the contractor is working over the navigable channel.
