MoDOT: U.S. ROUTE 60 (James River Freeway) Widening Project Between National Ave & Kansas Expy

Begins Week of September 12

Springfield, Greene County – Drivers can expect lane closings, traffic shifts and possible delays on U.S. Route 60 (James River Freeway) between National Avenue and Missouri Route 13 (Kansas Expressway) in south Springfield when a widening and resurfacing project begins the week of September 12, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The week of August 22, drivers will see work zone signs and other work zone items installed.

The project will add a lane in the Route 60 median in each direction between National Avenue and Missouri Route 13 (Kansas Expressway).

Here’s a look at the project:

  • Add lane in Route 60 median in each direction between National Avenue & Kansas Expressway
  • Widen Route 60 bridges over Campbell Avenue
  • Build two sound walls north of Route 60:
    • Between Republic Road bridge over Route 60 and National Avenue along Kickapoo Prairie Estates
    • Between Campbell Avenue and Republic Road bridge over Route 60 along Parkwest Village
  • Replace eastbound bridge approaches:
    • Republic Road bridge over US 60 between Campbell Avenue and National Avenue
    • Missouri Route 360 (James River Freeway) between Route MM and Sunshine Street
  • Resurface Route 60 southbound ramps  between Campbell Avenue and Kansas Expressway
  • Fog seal Route 60 shoulders
  • Intersection improvements at Campbell Avenue and Republic Road

Traffic Impacts:

  • Narrowed lanes and traffic shifts on Route 60 between National Avenue and Kansas Expressway
  • Eastbound left inside lane closures on two bridges: Monday, September 12 until Sunday, October 9
    • Eastbound Route 60 left lane closure on bridge west of West Bypass
    • Eastbound Missouri Route 360 left lane closure on bridge between Greene County Route MM and Missouri Route 413 (Sunshine Street) over railroad
    • Expect narrow driving lane with a 9-foot width restriction and 9-foot shoulder
  • Eastbound right outside lane closures on two bridges: Monday, October 10 until Sunday, November 13
    • Eastbound Route 60 right lane closure on bridge west of West Bypass
    • Eastbound Missouri Route 360 right lane closure on bridge between Greene County Route MM and Missouri Route 413 (Sunshine Street) over railroad
    • Expect narrow driving lane with an 11-foot width restriction and use of shoulder
  • Nighttime lane closures on Route 60 between National Avenue and Kansas Expressway
  • Drivers should not pass in the work zone due to narrowed driving lanes on Route 60 between National Avenue and Kansas Expressway
  • Traffic shifts on Campbell Avenue and Republic Road
  • Crews and equipment close to traffic in areas
  • Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zone
  • Drivers should look for alternate route

Weather and/or construction delays will alter the work schedule.

Bridge approach replacement completion date: November 13, 2022

Route 60 Widening Project Completion Date: November 1, 2024

Total estimated cost: $21 million

  • Intersection Improvements at Campbell Ave are a cost share with the City of Springfield
