MoDOT: Kansas Expressway Pedestrian Improvement Project

In Springfield Beginning the Week of December 4

Springfield, Greene County – Drivers can expect lane closings, narrow lanes and traffic shifts on Kansas Expressway (Missouri Route 13) in Springfield when contractor crews resurface and install signal, intersection and sidewalk (ADA) improvements beginning the week of December 4, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Kansas Expressway (Missouri Route 13) will receive a new asphalt driving surface between I-44 and U.S. Route 60 /James River Freeway in Springfield. Work will be done during nighttime hours and will include closure of the I-44 and Route 60 diverging diamond intersections for safety reasons.

Project improvements at various locations on Kansas Expressway from Norton Road to U.S. Route 60 /James River Freeway in Springfield include:

  • Replace existing non-compliant sidewalk and curb ramps in accordance with ADA requirements  
  • Install new sidewalk and ADA curb ramps to fill in sidewalk gaps in the locations below:
    • Walmart signal to Kearney Street on the west side of Kansas Expressway
    • Kearney Street to Atlantic Street on the east side of Kansas Expressway
    • Division Street to Chestnut Expressway on the east and west sides of Kansas Expressway
  • Replace existing push buttons with audible push buttons at signalized intersections
  • Replace existing non-compliant bus stop pads to meet ADA standards
  • Replace existing driveways to meet ADA standards
  • Update pavement marking to high visibility continental marking at crosswalks to enhance pedestrian safety
  • Add turn lanes, install a new storm water pipe and replace the signals on Kansas Expressway (Route 13) at the intersections of Sunset Street and Walnut Lawn Street
  • Resurface Kansas Expressway (Route 13) between I-44 and Route 60 (James River Freeway)

Traffic Impacts:

  • Lane closings, narrowed lanes and traffic shifts on Kansas Expressway/Missouri Route 13 at times
  • I-44 and Route 60/James River Freeway diverging diamond intersections at Kansas Expressway will be closed during nighttime resurfacing for safety reasons
  • Close Sunset Street for up to 7 days
  • Close Walnut Lawn Street for up to 7 days. A signed detour will be provided during closure.
  • During intersection work, turn lanes may be closed at times
  • Crews and equipment close to traffic
  • Temporary partial driveway disruptions during construction
  • During higher traffic volume times, expect occasional delays
  • No signed detour for Kansas Expressway work
  • Drivers may need to seek alternate routes to get to their destinations

Weather and/or construction delays will alter the work schedule.

D & E Plumbing & Heating, Inc., Nixa is doing the work for a low bid amount of $13.3 million and is a cost-share with the City of Springfield.

The project is to be completed by November 1, 2024.
