Districts Impacted
Rehabilitation work on several bridges over U.S. Route 54 is necessary to extend their lifespan and improve drivability and safety. Callaway County Route W, U.S. Route 63/Missouri Route 94, and Callaway County Route H/Business U.S. 54 bridges over U.S. Route 54 are in need of repairs.
U.S. Route 63/Route 94
Built in 1975, the twin bridges need deck repairs, concrete overlay, and application of protective coating. The guardrails on the Route 94 bridge will also be replaced.
The contractor will have up to 65 days on each of the twin bridges to complete the work. A signed detour will be in place. While some ramps will be closed, the eastbound U.S. Route 54 on-ramp to U.S. Route 63 will remain open. Neither bridge will be closed while the Route W bridge is under construction.
Route W (Airport Road)
The 35-year-old Route W (Airport Road) bridge over U.S. Route 54 will be closed for up to 60 days for deck repairs, concrete overlay, application of protective coating, and new guardrail installation.
A signed detour will be in place. Construction will not take place while the U.S. Route 63/Route 94 bridges are under rehabilitation.
Route H (Business U.S. 54)
The Route H (Business U.S. 54) bridge, built in 1978, needs deck repairs, concrete overlay, and application of protective coating. The bridge will remain open to one lane and traffic signals will be in place to guide motorists.
The rehabilitation work will be completed before construction crews begin the installation of offset left turn lanes at the intersection of U.S. Route 54 and Old Jefferson Road/County Road 306.
PROJECT PROGRESS
The Missouri Department of Transportation and its contractor designed improvements to extend the life of the bridges, including repairing the bridge decks, placing a latex concrete mix overlay, and applying a protective coating where necessary.
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $24,463,380.36 contract to Magruder Paving, LLC to complete this project and three others (U.S. Route 54 eastbound expansion, U.S. Route 54 pavement resurfacing in Callaway County, and intersection improvements at U.S. Route 54 and Old Jefferson City Road).
The overpass bridge closed on April 8 to replace the expansion joints, repair the abutments, apply a protective coating, and install new guardrail. The contractor was able to repair the lower parts of the bridge while keeping it open to traffic, which significantly shortened the potential 60-day closure to just 15 days. The bridge reopened to all traffic on April 23, 2024.
All ramps were open and a signed detour directed motorists around the closure.
Work on the two bridges includes deck repairs, concrete overlay, and application of protective coating. The guardrails on the Route 94 bridge will also be replaced.
On March 4, 2024, substructure work began underneath both bridges on the shoulder of U.S. Route 54. This work will continue through April 25, 2024.
Work on the decks will involve around-the-clock lane closures. While some ramps will be closed, the eastbound U.S. Route 54 on-ramp to northbound U.S. Route 63 will remain open. This work will not take place while the Route W (Airport Road) bridge is closed.
The Route H (Business U.S. 54) bridge, built in 1978, needs deck repairs, concrete overlay, and application of protective coating.
Rehabilitation work began April 8, 2024. The bridge is open to one lane and temporary traffic signals are in place to guide motorists through the work zone. Motorists should expect delays during peak traffic hours. This work is expected to continue through July 7, 2024.
All rehabilitation work on the bridges is expected to be completed by Dec. 1, 2024.
